We asked Rory: what does that discipline actually look like for you? Rory's routine includes: 

  • No caffeine after 2 p.m.
  • Last meal at least two hours before bed
  • Magnesium and theanine for sleep quality
  • Blue-light-blocking glasses in the evening
  • Sauna or Epsom salt baths when available
  • Cool room temperature for sleep

“You don’t always get every single thing right,” explains Rory. “But, if I can get two-thirds or three-quarters of those habits dialed in, I know I’m giving myself a really good chance at a good night’s rest.”

On avoiding burnout

When preparing to perform at his best, Rory's approach is deliberate. We asked Rory: your WHOOP data shows a big ramp in training volume in the last few months. What does your week look like when you’re preparing to peak?

“Early in competition weeks, I try to get really good sessions on the driving range and putting green, a few strength sessions in the gym, and just adjust to the new environment. Practice rounds are a big part of that too — understanding the course conditions and mapping out the strategy for the week. Then once the competition starts, I’ll still do mini versions of those strength sessions. It’s really about waking the nervous system up and making sure everything is ready to go.”

The goal is to stay sharp without overreaching.

What does readiness mean?

Even on the days he might make history, Rory relies on his routine. We asked Rory: what does “ready to go” mean for you on a competition morning? “Routine. That’s the biggest thing," he says. "I get to the course about three hours before my tee time.  I’ll go to the gym and do whatever I need to do that day. Then breakfast, range, putting green. That three-hour window goes quickly, but I’ve got my routine dialed in. If I don’t get that time, I feel rushed."

Playing for the long game

We asked Rory: at this stage of your career, do you think about longevity? “Absolutely, I think about it. I’ve been a professional golfer for nearly 18 years, and they’ve been 18 pretty high-quality years. I feel like I can continue that for at least another decade," says Rory. "Even beyond competitive golf, you want your quality of life to be as good as it possibly can be.
