On-Demand ECG Heart Screener for Instant Rhythm Checks

Your heart is at the center of your health and performance, and Heart Screener helps you stay connected with on-demand electrocardiograms (ECG) readings. This feature provides medical-grade insights into your heart's electrical activity—helping you detect atrial fibrillation (AFib) and monitor heart rate patterns anytime, anywhere.
What is Heart Screener?
Heart Screener, exclusive to WHOOP Life, helps you detect atrial fibrillation (AFib), the most common heart arrhythmia, as well as identify high or low heart rate with on-demand ECG readings. You can assess your heart's electrical activity anytime, anywhere.
How does it work?
The ECG feature measures the electrical signals that regulate your heartbeat, offering a deeper level of analysis than simple heart rate.
To take an ECG reading*:
- In the WHOOP app, go to the Health tab, tap Heart Screener, and then follow the ECG prompts.
- Place your thumb and index finger on the sensor indents of your WHOOP clasp.
- In 30 seconds, receive a detailed report on your heart's rhythm that you can share with a loved one or healthcare provider.
Understanding your ECG results
Your ECG results will indicate one of the following:
- Normal Sinus Rhythm – Heart is beating in a uniform pattern. This happens when the upper and lower chambers of the heart are beating in sync.
- Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) Detected – Heart is beating in an irregular pattern with the upper and lower chambers of the heart out of sync.
- Low or High Heart Rate: Heart is beating below 50 beats per minute (bradycardia) or over 100 beats per minute (tachycardia).
- Inconclusive – ECG reading cannot be classified or assessed. The recording may show signs of other arrhythmias or conditions that the app is not designed to recognize yet.
Why Heart Screener matters
Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is a serious but often undetected irregular heart rhythm linked to stroke, heart failure, and cognitive decline. AFib can be asymptomatic and sporadic, leaving millions unaware of their risk.
AFib is more common in women than men and increases in prevalence with age. It even affects elite endurance athletes in ways that are still being studied. WHOOP is leading the way in performance science and innovation—helping people stay informed and prepared.
How Heart Screener was developed
Heart Screener was validated with rigorous scientific research and clinical testing. WHOOP first documented the connection between irregular heart rhythms, sleep quality, and recovery in 2020. After years of data collection, algorithm development, and testing, Heart Screener meets clinical-accuracy standards for detecting AFib.
Who can access Heart Screener?
Heart Screener is available exclusively to WHOOP Life members with a WHOOP MG device. This feature is medically regulated and availability varies by region.
WHOOP ECG is intended for users 22 years of age and older. It is not recommended for those with known arrhythmias other than AFib or for individuals with implanted electronic devices like pacemakers or ICDs.
Take the next step in your heart health
Staying informed about your cardiovascular health is key to optimizing your performance and longevity. Heart Screener monitors your heart's electrical activity and provides actionable insights for performance and longevity when you need them.
Frequently asked questions about WHOOP ECG
Can WHOOP detect heart arrhythmia?
Yes. Heart Screener detects atrial fibrillation (AFib), the most common type of heart arrhythmia, using an on-demand ECG reading.
Where is the ECG feature in the WHOOP app?
You can find the ECG feature within the Heart Screener card in the Health tab of the WHOOP app. From there, you can initiate a new reading or view past reports.
What is the difference between an ECG and the heart rate data WHOOP collects all day?
Your daily heart rate is measured using photoplethysmography (PPG), which uses light to measure blood flow. An electrocardiogram (ECG) directly records the heart's electrical signals, providing a more detailed analysis of your heart rhythm that can detect conditions like AFib.
Can I share my ECG report with my doctor?
Yes. After taking an ECG reading, you can generate a detailed report within the WHOOP app. This report can be exported as a PDF and shared with your healthcare provider.
*Heart Screener is only available with a WHOOP Life Membership with a WHOOP MG device
WHOOP ECG is not intended for users with known arrhythmias other than AFib or users under 22 years old. It is not recommended for users with a cardiac pacemaker, ICDs or other implanted electronic devices. This is a medically regulated feature and is not currently available in every region.
