WHOOP Joins $34.5M ARPA-H–Backed Coalition to Develop First FDA-Grade Intrinsic Capacity Score

BOSTON, MA — WHOOP today announced its participation in THRIVE (Transforming Health: Reclaiming Intrinsic Vitality for Everyone), a Stanford-led coalition awarded up to $34.5 million by the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H). The initiative will develop the first FDA-grade “Intrinsic Capacity” (IC) score - a robust, longitudinal predictive model designed to forecast major health outcomes up to 20 years in advance.
Intrinsic Capacity, defined by the World Health Organization as the combination of physical and mental abilities that enable independence and healthy aging, represents one of the most important yet currently unmeasured indicators in medicine. The THRIVE coalition, led by Dr. Michael Snyder at Stanford University, in collaboration with the Buck Institute for Research on Aging and Methuselah Foundation - aims to change that. Through large-scale decentralized trials in partnership with the YMCA and OpenCures, evaluating whether lifestyle interventions measurably improve intrinsic capacity, researchers ultimately aim to translate the IC score into an accessible at-home assessment priced under $100.
WHOOP will contribute continuous, real-world physiological data generated through its wearable technology to help power the PROSPR IC score. The model will integrate wearable data, health surveys, functional assessments, and blood-based biomarkers across large longitudinal datasets to predict outcomes including mortality, hospitalization, multimorbidity, and loss of functional ability.
“This research initiative represents a fundamental shift toward quantifying resilience, functional capacity, and the behaviors that shape long-term outcomes, " said Emily Capodilupo, SVP of Research, Algorithms, and Data at WHOOP. “Our mission at WHOOP is to add one billion healthy years to the planet, and that starts with building the scientific foundation to measure what truly drives healthspan. By combining continuous physiological data with clinical and molecular research at scale, PROSPR is helping redefine how aging is understood, measured, and ultimately improved. We are proud to partner with the THRIVE team in this historic program”
By establishing a responsive, FDA-grade surrogate endpoint for age-related decline, the PROSPR platform has the potential to significantly accelerate clinical trials targeting aging. This will enable researchers to measure meaningful improvements in resilience and function years earlier than traditional endpoints allow.
This partnership builds on the company’s longstanding commitment to longevity science and its leadership in advancing healthspan research. Last year, WHOOP launched its Healthspan with WHOOP Age feature that analyzes key physiological markers to determine a member’s biological age and "Pace of Aging." WHOOP is committed to continuing to expand research in healthspan and longevity over the coming years.
