What is Healthspan?

At the core of Healthspan are two key insights:

  • WHOOP Age – A measure of your physiological age, which can be younger or older than your actual, chronological age. 
  • Pace of Aging – A dynamic measure of how quickly your WHOOP Age is changing.

WHOOP Age is a harder metric to move and updates more gradually over time, offering a long-term view of your physiological health.

Pace of Aging is a dynamic score, reflecting the immediate impact of your lifestyle choices. It ranges from -1x to 3x, where a 3x score means you’re increasing your WHOOP Age, while -1x means you’re decreasing your WHOOP Age. 

Healthspan calculates these insights by analyzing nine key metrics across sleep, strain, and fitness. It factors in sleep consistency and total hours of sleep, measures daily steps, time spent in heart rate zones 1-3 and 4-5, and time dedicated to strength-based activities, and evaluates VO₂ Max, Resting heart rate (RHR), and Lean Body Mass to provide a comprehensive view of how your behaviors affect your long-term health.

Healthspan brings together these key metrics into WHOOP Age and Pace of Aging, to reflect a comprehensive picture of your long term health outlook and how it’s trending. These nine metrics were selected based on extensive research linking sleep, cardiovascular fitness, and physical activity to longevity and overall well-being. Studies show that consistent sleep patterns, a strong cardiovascular system, and regular movement are among the most powerful predictors of a longer, healthier life.

Each metric plays a critical role:

  • Sleep consistency and total sleep hours are directly tied to recovery, cognitive function, and disease prevention.
  • Daily steps, time in heart rate zones, and strength activity measure how effectively you challenge and support your body over time.
  • VO₂ Max, Resting Heart Rate, and Lean Body Mass provide a snapshot of cardiovascular efficiency and metabolic health, two of the strongest indicators of long-term vitality.

How to access Healthspan

If you’re a WHOOP Peak or WHOOP Life member using a WHOOP 5.0, or WHOOP MG device, you have access to Healthspan. WHOOP 4.0 members will have access to Healthspan soon. 

Healthspan unlocks, after you log 21 recoveries within your first 31 days. To continue receiving updates, you’ll need to maintain at least 21 recoveries in each 31-day period.

Once unlocked, Healthspan updates weekly in the WHOOP app. By monitoring these insights, you can see exactly how your behaviors are affecting your future, and make real-time adjustments to improve your longevity.

How was Healthspan developed?

Healthspan was built on rigorous scientific research, combining data-backed metrics with real-world applications. A team of scientists and engineers carefully selected nine key metrics by analyzing extensive research on physiological age and longevity. The foundation of Healthspan is All-Cause Mortality—a key metric in age research that measures the overall likelihood of death from any cause within a population.

Healthspan was developed using peer-reviewed literature on healthy aging to determine which metrics matter most and how they influence long-term health. For example, research shows that higher VO₂ Max strongly correlates with lower all-cause mortality risk and a better quality of life, making it a critical input. Using this framework, the team identified additional key metrics and built a proprietary algorithm based on all-cause mortality.
