Introducing Heart Screener: A smarter way to stay connected to your heart health

Your heart is at the center of your health and performance, and Heart Screener helps you stay connected with on-demand electrocardiograms (ECG) readings.

What is Heart Screener?

Heart Screener, exclusive to WHOOP Life, helps you detect atrial fibrillation (AFib), the most common heart arrhythmia, as well as identify high or low heart rate with on-demand ECG readings–so you can assess your heart’s electrical activity anytime, anywhere.

How does it work?

The ECG feature measures the electrical signals that regulate your heartbeat, offering a deeper level of analysis than simple heart rate.

To take an ECG reading*:

  1. In the WHOOP app, go to the Health tab, tap Heart Screener, and then follow the ECG prompts.
  2. Place your thumb and index finger on the sensor indents of your WHOOP clasp.
  3. In seconds, receive a detailed report on your heart’s rhythm that you can share with a loved one or healthcare provider.

Your ECG results will indicate one of the following:

  • Normal Sinus Rhythm – Heart is beating in a uniform pattern. This happens when the upper and lower chambers of the heart are beating in sync.
  • Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) Detected – Heart is beating in an irregular pattern with the upper and lower chambers of the heart out of sync.
  • Low or High Heart Rate: Heart is beating below 50 beats per minute (bradycardia) or over 100 beats per minute (tachycardia).
  • Inconclusive – ECG reading cannot be classified or assessed. The recording may show signs of other arrhythmias or conditions that the app is not designed to recognize yet.

Why does Heart Screener matter?

Atrial fibrillation (AFib), a serious but often undetected irregular heart rhythm, is a growing cardiovascular epidemic—linked to stroke, heart failure, and cognitive decline. AFib can be asymptomatic and sporadic, leaving millions unaware of their risk.

AFib is more common in women than men, increases in prevalence with age, and even affects elite endurance athletes in ways that are still being studied. With a growing body of research and data collected at scale, WHOOP is leading the way in performance science and innovation — helping people stay informed and prepared.

How was Heart Screener developed?

Heart Screener was validated with rigorous scientific research and clinical testing. WHOOP first documented the connection between irregular heart rhythms, sleep quality, and recovery in 2020. After years of data collection, algorithm development, and testing, Heart Screener meets and exceeds clinical-accuracy standards for detecting AFib, ensuring you get reliable, actionable insights backed by science.
