WHOOP Wins Red Dot Award for Product Design Excellence

By WHOOP

BOSTON, MA – March 31, 2016 – WHOOP today announced that it has won the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2016. The Red Dot Award is one of the largest and most prestigious product design awards in the world.

WHOOP is a performance optimization system that helps elite athletes and teams win more. Its wrist-worn strap is a key component of the system, which continuously measures strain and recovery variables (heart rate, heart rate variability, sleep performance and quality, skin conductivity, and ambient temperature) during all types of activity, at a rate of 100 times per second, 24 hours a day.

“We are grateful to be named a 2016 Red Dot Product Design Award recipient,” said Will Ahmed, Founder & CEO, WHOOP. “We designed the WHOOP Strap to tie fashion with function, creating a comfortable, convenient alternative to a chest strap that still provides elite athletes and teams with the highest level of physiological awareness. A sleek design that can be worn continuously and comfortably without interfering with performance is critical for athletes. This award validates the incredible work done by our design team at Aruliden, my co-founders John and Nicolae, our engineers at WHOOP, and the contributions of Martin Oberhaeuser, Nicholas Negroponte, and Antonio Bertone.”

Participants from 57 nations submitted over 5,200 products and innovations for the Red Dot: Product Design 2016 Awards. Winning products were selected based on innovation, functionality, quality, ergonomics, and durability.

“With their performances, the Red Dot winners not only demonstrated an extraordinary design quality, but they also showed that design is an integral part of innovative product solutions,” said Professor Dr. Peter Zec, founder and president of the Red Dot Award.

WHOOP is working with teams across the NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB, MLS, and the English Premier League, along with several Olympic teams and trainers for some of the world’s most elite athletes, such as LeBron James. At the collegiate level, WHOOP is being used in all major conferences, including the SEC, Big 10, Pac 10, ACC, Big 12, and the Ivy League.

About the Red Dot Design Award

In order to appraise the wide scope of design in a professional manner, the Red Dot Design Award is broken down into the three distinct disciplines: the Red Dot Award: Product Design, Red Dot Award: Communication Design and Red Dot Award: Design Concept. The Red Dot Award is organized by the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen in Essen, Germany. With more than 17,000 entries in 2015 alone, it is one of the largest competitions in the world. It was in 1955 that a jury convened for the first time to assess the best designs of the day. The name and brand of the award were developed in the 1990s by Red Dot CEO, Professor Dr. Peter Zec. Since then the sought-after “Red Dot” is the revered international seal of outstanding design quality. Further information: www.red-dot.org.
