WHOOP Delivers Innovative Blood Pressure Insights for a Deeper Look at Your Well-Being

What is Blood Pressure Insights?
Blood Pressure Insights is a groundbreaking feature available on WHOOP Life that provides daily systolic and diastolic blood pressure estimations, offering members a new way to understand how blood pressure affects their performance and well-being. This patent-pending technology gives you these insights right from your wrist.
How Does It Work?
The WHOOP sensors measure heart rate, heart rate variability (HRV), and blood flow patterns during sleep to estimate systolic and diastolic ranges upon waking. Since blood pressure fluctuates throughout the day, WHOOP focuses on a consistent time frame when the body is at rest and readings are least affected by confounding factors like movement, stress, or caffeine.
Systolic and diastolic blood pressure are two key measurements that indicate the force of blood against your artery walls.
- Systolic blood pressure (the higher number) measures the pressure in your arteries when your heart beats (contracts) and pumps blood.
- Diastolic blood pressure (the lower number) measures the pressure in your arteries when your heart is at rest between beats.
To calibrate your baseline, log a traditional cuff reading in-app to unlock Blood Pressure Insights. Your reading makes the feature more personalized and helps contribute to the development of the algorithm. While the feature is in beta, expect updates that may impact your trends.
Your true estimate may be higher or lower as shown by the displayed range of blood pressure values. WHOOP only estimates blood pressure once per day, so the value will not change during the day. The insights are then displayed in the Health tab of the WHOOP app.
Why Does It Matter?
Blood pressure is a key indicator of overall wellness and it has impacts on daily performance, as well. The impact of blood pressure on sleep, recovery, and performance are not well understood or widely studied. WHOOP is changing that – empowering members with a way to understand how blood pressure affects these aspects of their wellbeing and performance. WHOOP pioneered wrist-measured HRV, turning a novel metric into another layer of insight. Blood Pressure is the next frontier of understanding the bigger picture of wellbeing and performance.
How was it developed?
WHOOP trained and validated a model for blood pressure estimation using data collections from over 11,000 unique users across 32,000 sleep sessions. Data was recorded overnight and blood pressure was measured shortly after waking up to ensure high levels of accuracy, and then was compared to cuff measurements. The model estimates morning systolic and diastolic blood pressure using PPG (photoplethysmography, which uses non-invasive light sensors) pulse waveform throughout sleep, along with heart rate, recovery metrics, and demographic factors.
WHOOP conducted a study in 2024 through WHOOP Digital Labs to assess the impact of blood pressure, stress, and sleep, analyzing data from a large group of participants. The WHOOP team found interesting associations of blood pressure with recovery and well-being. Conducting a combination of additional analysis and literature search led to WHOOP developing this feature enabling members to better understand how blood pressure impacts different aspects of their performance.
